The Haapsalu Railway Museum is located in one of Estonia's most architecturally significant railway stations, built in 1907 specifically for the visit of Russian Tsar Nicholas II. The distinctive ensemble features a 216-meter covered platform, which was the longest in Europe at the time of its construction, designed to protect dignitaries from the elements. The museum showcases an impressive collection of historical locomotives and carriages, which can be viewed on the tracks outdoors. Inside the former waiting rooms and luggage area, visitors can learn about the construction of the Tallinn-Haapsalu line and the pivotal role the railway played in the development of the spa town. The exhibition also highlights the technical advancements of the Estonian railway system and the lives of rail workers through various historical eras. Although regular train services ceased in 1995, the station remains a lively monument and a major draw for technology enthusiasts and architecture lovers from around the world.
