Matsalu National Park (Estonia)

Weather…

Matsalu National Park, located on the western coast of Estonia, is one of Europe's most significant bird sanctuaries and a vital stopover on the East Atlantic Flyway. Established as a national park in 2004, it encompasses the shallow Matsalu Bay, the delta of the Kasari River, and around 50 islands in the Väinameri Sea. The park is famous for its vast coastal meadows and floodplain pastures, which have been maintained for centuries through traditional cattle and sheep grazing, creating a unique ecosystem that supports a tremendous variety of flora and fauna. During the peak migration seasons, hundreds of thousands of birds, including up to 20,000 common cranes at once, gather here, making it a world-class destination for birdwatchers and researchers. Beyond its avian importance, Matsalu is home to rare orchid species and diverse plant life found in its wooded meadows. The Penijõe visitor center, housed in an old manor house, provides educational exhibits on the park's history and ecology, and serves as a gateway to numerous hiking trails and birdwatching towers that offer panoramic views of the wetlands.
