Ruins of Elobey Chico (Equatorial Guinea)

Weather…

The ruins of Elobey Chico are located on a small, now uninhabited island at the mouth of the Muni River. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the island was a flourishing trade center and even served temporarily as the administrative capital of the Rio Muni district. The ruins include remains of residences, warehouses, and administrative buildings once used by European traders and officials. With the rise of Bata as the primary port on the mainland, Elobey Chico lost its significance and was eventually abandoned. Today, the tropical rainforest has almost completely reclaimed the island, with stone ruins hauntingly protruding from the dense greenery. This site is a powerful monument to the fleeting nature of prosperity and colonial influence. For visitors arriving by boat, it has a fascinating panorama of past grandeur amidst an untouched natural landscape.
