Akanda National Park is located just north of Libreville and forms a crucial ecosystem for coastal protection and marine biodiversity. The park is renowned for its extensive mangrove forests and tidal mudflats, which serve as vital nurseries for numerous species of fish and crustaceans. Nature lovers visit here to explore the pristine amphibious landscapes and enjoy the absolute tranquility just a stone's throw away from the bustling capital. For birdwatchers in particular, Akanda is an absolute highlight. It hosts the largest concentration of migratory birds in all of Gabon. Thousands of Palearctic waders spend their winter in the nutrient-rich bays of Corisco and Mondah. In addition to the spectacular avian life, visitors might also spot marine turtles and various monkey species in the denser forested sections. Exploration is most magical when done quietly via kayak or small boats. Because the park is so close to Libreville, it is perfectly suited for easy day trips. Access is straightforward and usually involves a short boat ride from the city. The dry season from June to September has pleasant weather, but for dedicated birdwatchers, the months of the European winter (November to March) are the most rewarding when the migratory flocks arrive.
