La Concordia is a young and dynamic city in the Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas Province, noted for its strategic location at the crossroads of major transportation routes in northwestern Ecuador. For decades, the town was at the center of a territorial dispute between the provinces of Esmeraldas and Pichincha, which was finally resolved through a popular referendum in 2011 and its subsequent incorporation into the new province in 2013. Geographically, La Concordia sits in a lush tropical zone characterized by high rainfall and exceptionally fertile soil. The local economy is driven almost exclusively by agriculture, with a focus on oil palm, bananas, cocoa, and tropical fruits like passion fruit. Due to its extensive palm oil production, the city is regarded as one of the nation's most important agro-industrial hubs. The urban center has experienced rapid growth in recent years, functioning as a vital service node for the surrounding rural communities. Culturally, La Concordia is a place of great diversity, as it was settled by migrants from various parts of Ecuador seeking opportunities in the expanding agricultural frontier.
