Esmeraldas Refinery (Ecuador)

Weather…

The Esmeraldas Refinery is the largest oil processing facility in Ecuador, located on the northern coast near the city of Esmeraldas. Operated by the state-owned Petroecuador, it was commissioned in 1977 and serves as the cornerstone of the national energy infrastructure. The facility has a nominal processing capacity of approximately 110,000 barrels of crude oil per day, producing essential fuels such as gasoline, diesel, and liquefied petroleum gas for the domestic market. Between 2008 and 2015, the plant underwent a massive multi-billion dollar rehabilitation project to increase efficiency and meet modern environmental standards. It is connected to the Amazonian oil fields via the SOTE pipeline, which provides a steady supply of heavy crude oil. Despite ongoing technical challenges, the refinery remains a strategic asset for Ecuador's industrial growth and energy security, providing thousands of direct and indirect jobs in the region.
