Durán, officially known as Eloy Alfaro, is a significant city in the Guayas province, located directly across from Guayaquil on the east bank of the Guayas River. The city is connected to Guayaquil by the imposing Unidad Nacional bridge and serves as a major industrial and logistical hub for the region. Historically, Durán gained great importance as the terminus of the trans-Andean railway, which linked the highlands to the coast and drove Ecuador's economic boom in the early 20th century. The city was named after José Durán Maristany, who provided the land for the construction of the railway station. Today, Durán hosts numerous factories and processing plants, particularly in the food and textile sectors. Culturally, the city is known for its annual fair, which attracts thousands of visitors. Despite its close ties to Guayaquil, Durán has maintained a distinct identity, strongly rooted in its railway history and industrial workforce. The city also serves as a starting point for excursions into the rural areas of the coastal province.
