Arenillas Ecological Reserve (Ecuador)

Weather…

The Arenillas Ecological Reserve is situated in southwestern Ecuador within the El Oro province, near the border with Peru. Spanning approximately 13,170 hectares, it protects one of the most vital remnants of the Tumbesian dry forest, a critically endangered ecosystem. For several decades, the area was managed as a military zone, which inadvertently helped preserve its natural state before it was officially designated as an ecological reserve in 2001. The landscape is characterized by cacti, thorny shrubs, and massive Ceiba trees adapted to prolonged dry seasons. Arenillas is a biodiversity hotspot, especially for birds, with over 150 recorded species, many of which are endemic to the Tumbesian region. Fauna includes mammals like the Sechura fox, howler monkeys, and collared peccaries. The reserve plays a crucial role in preventing desertification and maintaining a biological corridor for species specialized in arid environments.

Etiquette
