Moussa Ali is a massive stratovolcano that rises at the tripoint of Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Eritrea. Reaching an elevation of 2,028 meters above sea level, it is the highest peak in Djibouti and a prominent landmark of the region. The volcano consists of two summits, the northern one being the highest, and features a caldera characterized by rhyolitic lava flows. Moussa Ali is part of the Afar Depression, a geologically extremely active zone where the Earth's crust is thinning. Despite the barren and rocky environment, the mountain is of great significance to the local Afar nomads, who use its slopes for grazing their goats and camels. Climbing to the summit is considered challenging and requires thorough preparation due to the extreme heat and lack of water sources. From the top, it provides an impressive panoramic view over the vast plains of the Danakil Desert and the adjacent mountain ranges.
