Monte Soratte (Italy)

Weather…

Monte Soratte is a prominent limestone ridge in the province of Rome, rising in isolation to 691 meters above the Tiber River valley. Geologically distinct from the surrounding volcanic hills, it consists of Mesozoic limestone and features numerous karst phenomena like caves and sinkholes. In ancient times, the mountain was sacred to the god Apollo, and its summit was home to a famous temple mentioned by Roman poets such as Horace. During the early Middle Ages, it became a center for monastic life, exemplified by the 6th-century Church of San Silvestro at its highest point. The mountain gained strategic significance in 1943 when German forces under Field Marshal Albert Kesselring constructed a vast network of underground bunkers within it. Currently, it is protected as the Riserva Naturale del Monte Soratte, serving as a vital sanctuary for local biodiversity and a site for historical tourism.
