Lake Assal (Djibouti)

Weather…

Lake Assal is a saline crater lake located in central Djibouti, situated at the top of the Great Rift Valley. It lies approximately 155 meters below sea level, making it the lowest point on the African continent and the third lowest point on Earth. The lake is surrounded by a vast landscape of salt pans and dormant volcanoes, creating a stark and mineral-rich environment. With a salinity level of roughly 34.8 percent, it is one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world, even saltier than the Dead Sea. Historically, the Afar people have harvested salt from its shores for centuries, transporting it across the Horn of Africa via camel caravans. Today, the lake remains a critical industrial resource for salt extraction and a significant geological landmark. The surrounding area is characterized by extreme temperatures that can exceed 50 degrees Celsius during the summer months. Geological studies indicate that the lake is fed by subterranean springs connected to the Gulf of Tadjoura, yet it has no visible outlet.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
This extremely low-lying crater lake in central Djibouti is best accessed using a rugged off-road vehicle. The drive through the barren volcanic landscape is an unforgettable experience itself.
📅
Best season
Due to the scorching summer heat, a visit is highly advisable almost exclusively in the slightly milder winter months between November and February. In summer, it is one of the hottest places on earth.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The shoreline consists of sharp-edged salt crusts and scattered volcanic boulders. Walking on the extensive salt flats requires sturdy, closed-toe footwear to completely avoid painful cuts.
🎒
What to bring
Sunglasses are absolutely essential, as the blindingly white salt flats reflect sunlight intensely. A hat, high-factor sunscreen, and massive quantities of drinking water must be brought along.
🅿️
Parking
There are informal parking areas near the lake where visitors can safely leave their cars. You should park carefully to ensure the vehicle does not get permanently stuck in the soft, salty ground.
⚠️
Safety
The fierce heat and dehydration risk are extreme hazards here. Bathing in the highly saline water is generally discouraged, as it can cause skin irritation and there are no freshwater showers available.
⏱️
Time needed
The drive to and stay at the salt lake typically take up a large part of the day. For the actual viewing of the stark shoreline, one hour in the shimmering heat is often quite enough.
