The Goda Mountains rise majestically to the northwest of the Gulf of Tadjoura and are among the most fascinating natural landscapes in Djibouti. With peaks reaching up to 1,750 meters into the sky, these mountains act as a natural barrier, trapping moisture rolling in from the sea and creating a surprisingly lush and green ecosystem. This unique geography makes the Goda Mountains a popular destination for hikers and adventurers seeking an escape from the oppressive heat of the lowlands. The area is heavily characterized by deep rocky gorges, hidden seasonal waterfalls, and traditional villages. A major highlight of the region is the village of Bankouale, well known for its palm-fringed oases and small community gardens nourished by ancient irrigation systems. Travelers have the opportunity to stay in simple but highly authentic eco-camps run by the local Afar community. From here, extensive trekking tours set off through the spectacular and challenging mountainous landscape. The Goda Mountains are a low-key spot and require a certain spirit of adventure to explore, as the roads are often unpaved and treacherous. A robust four-wheel-drive vehicle is absolutely essential. The best time to visit is between November and March, when temperatures are pleasant and nature shows its greenest side.
