Ambado Archaeological Site (Djibouti)

Weather…

The Ambado archaeological site is situated on the coast of the Gulf of Tadjoura, approximately 15 kilometers west of Djibouti City. It is internationally recognized for its extensive finds of prehistoric pottery, providing valuable information about early maritime settlements in the region. Excavations have brought to light numerous clay shards with characteristic decorations, dated to the first millennium BC. In addition to ceramics, shell middens and stone artifacts were found, indicating a diet heavily reliant on marine resources. Geographically, the site is located in a volcanic coastal landscape characterized by basaltic rocks and narrow beaches. The finds provide evidence of early trade connections across the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Today, Ambado serves as an important reference point for researching the settlement history of the Djiboutian coast prior to the arrival of Islam.
