Loyada Palm Groves (Djibouti)

Weather…

The palm groves of Loyada are located approximately 15 kilometers south of Djibouti City, right on the border with Somalia. This is the only coastal stretch in the country where palm trees grow directly on the beach, giving the site a specific ecological significance. Historically, Loyada was an important meeting point for caravans and served as a border station between French Somaliland and the British protectorate during the colonial era. Numerous graves of historical figures and religious leaders are located within the groves, making the site a cultural memorial. The vegetation mainly consists of date palms fed by brackish water and coastal groundwater. Geographically, Loyada forms the easternmost point of the Djiboutian coast before the Somali border. The combination of a maritime climate and shady palms provides a habitat for various bird species and small mammals seeking shelter in the barren surroundings.
