It is strategically located along National Route 1, a crucial transportation artery that connects Djibouti City with Ali Sabieh and the Ethiopian border. This position makes it a local hub for trade and transport. The town lies on the edge of the Grand Bara desert, forming a transition between the extremely arid plain and the slightly more fertile areas further south. The population is mainly composed of members of the Issa people.
