Loyada is a small coastal town in the Arta Region of Djibouti. Its primary significance lies in its function as the main border crossing point between Djibouti and Somaliland, an autonomous region of Somalia. It is located just about 20 kilometers southeast of the capital, Djibouti City, on the road that runs along the coast of the Gulf of Aden. Historically, Loyada was a small fishing village with an economy based on the sea. With the establishment of the border and the growth of regional trade, its strategic importance grew. The border crossing is a vital channel for the movement of people and goods, particularly for the import of khat from Ethiopia into Somaliland via Djibouti. The town itself is small, with basic facilities catering to the local population as well as the many travelers and traders who cross the border. Security at the crossing is high, as it represents a crucial economic and political link in a volatile region.
