Geologically, the ridge is characterized by a mixture of limestone and volcanic layers, bearing witness to the complex uplift of the region during the opening of the Red Sea. The strategic importance of the Arta Ridge is immense, as it overlooks vast portions of the Gulf and the capital, Djibouti City. Historically, the region has hosted significant political negotiations, such as the peace conference for Somalia in 2000. Vegetation here is relatively lush compared to the surroundings, featuring scattered juniper trees and wildflowers that bloom during the cooler months.
