It is separated from the main gulf by a narrow, treacherous strait and is surrounded by steep, black volcanic cliffs and the active volcanic fields of Ardoukoba. The lake was formed by the intense tectonic activity of the Afar Triple Junction, where the Earth's crust is actively pulling apart. Its waters reach depths of over 200 meters and are known for their strong currents and high salinity.
