Virunga Mountains

The Virunga Mountains are a chain of volcanoes in the Albertine Rift, on the border between Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Uganda. The chain consists of eight major volcanoes, most of which are dormant, except for Mount Nyiragongo (3,470 m) and Mount Nyamuragira (3,058 m), which are collectively responsible for nearly two-fifths of Africa's historical volcanic eruptions. The highest peak is Mount Karisimbi, at 4,507 meters. These mountains are the habitat of the critically endangered mountain gorilla, which are protected within Virunga National Park (DRC), Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda), and Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda). The region was brought to international fame through the pioneering research and conservation efforts of primatologist Dian Fossey. The area's unique biodiversity also includes golden monkeys, forest elephants, and a multitude of bird species, making it a critical conservation area. The volcanic soils are extremely fertile and support a dense human population in the surrounding areas, leading to human-wildlife conflicts.
