Virunga Mountains (Congo - Kinshasa)

Weather…

The Virunga Mountains are a chain of volcanoes in the Albertine Rift, on the border between Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Uganda. The chain consists of eight major volcanoes, most of which are dormant, except for Mount Nyiragongo (3,470 m) and Mount Nyamuragira (3,058 m), which are collectively responsible for nearly two-fifths of Africa's historical volcanic eruptions. The highest peak is Mount Karisimbi, at 4,507 meters. These mountains are the habitat of the critically endangered mountain gorilla, which are protected within Virunga National Park (DRC), Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda), and Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda). The region was brought to international fame through the pioneering research and conservation efforts of primatologist Dian Fossey. The area's unique biodiversity also includes golden monkeys, forest elephants, and a multitude of bird species, making it a critical conservation area. The volcanic soils are extremely fertile and support a dense human population in the surrounding areas, leading to human-wildlife conflicts.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Goma is the main access hub; transport to the park is typically handled via organized National Park transfers, as the region presents significant logistical challenges for independent travelers.
📅
Best season
The drier months from June to September and December to February are good; however, at high altitudes, it is frequently misty, damp, and significantly cold during the night.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain features steep volcanic flanks ranging from dense bamboo forests to alpine scree slopes; trails can be very slippery and difficult to navigate after frequent rainfall.
🎒
What to bring
Warm thermal layers, a waterproof jacket, and sturdy hiking boots are essential; gardening gloves are often recommended for gripping vegetation near stinging plants on steep sections.
🅿️
Parking
Secure parking is only available at the Virunga National Park headquarters, such as in Rumangabo; private parking in unsecured areas should be strictly avoided for safety reasons.
⚠️
Safety
Due to regional instability, trekking is only permitted under the escort of armed rangers; stay informed daily about the current security situation from local park authorities.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical summit hike or gorilla trek lasts between 6 and 10 hours; plan for additional time for gradual acclimatization to the high altitude before starting strenuous climbs.
