Mount Bisoke (Congo - Kinshasa)

Weather…

Mount Bisoke, also referred to as Visoke, is an active stratovolcano within the Virunga Mountains, straddling the international border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Reaching an elevation of 3,711 meters, it is a key feature of Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park and the DRC's Virunga National Park. The summit is notable for its well-defined crater lake, which measures approximately 450 meters in diameter. The volcano's most recent significant eruption occurred in 1957, leading to the formation of two small cones on its northern flank. Geologically, Bisoke is part of the Albertine Rift system, formed by tectonic activity over millions of years. The slopes are covered in diverse vegetation zones, including bamboo forests that provide a critical habitat for endangered mountain gorillas. Historically, the mountain gained fame as the location for Dian Fossey's Karisoke Research Center, situated in the saddle between Bisoke and Mount Karisimbi.
