Mount Bisoke is a dormant volcano in the Virunga Mountains, straddling the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Reaching an elevation of 3,711 meters, it is a prominent feature of Volcanoes National Park, distinguished by a large crater lake at its summit. The volcano was formed during the Pleistocene epoch, with its last significant eruption recorded in 1957. The slopes are covered in dense bamboo forests and Hagenia-Hypericum woodland, serving as a critical habitat for endangered mountain gorillas. Hikers traversing the mountain pass through various vegetation zones, observing unique Afro-alpine flora. In addition to the summit lake, the smaller Lake Ngezi is located on the mountain's flanks, also originating from past volcanic eruptions.

Getting there
Treks generally commence at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi, where necessary permits are strictly verified. Visitors are then typically transferred to the actual trailhead location.
Best season
The months from June to September and December to February are typically preferred for significantly drier trails. During the wetter months, the paths frequently turn into deep, slippery mud slides.
Terrain & paths
The trail is notoriously famous for its steep and incredibly muddy passages through dense montane forest up to the crater lake. The vegetation is highly lush and demands physical effort in tight spots.
What to bring
Sturdy gardening gloves to protect against stinging nettles, thick gaiters, and reliable waterproof boots are utterly essential. A lightweight rain jacket should always be carried due to the microclimate.

Visitors generally park their personal vehicles safely at the main park headquarters located in Kinigi. The parking area is actively guarded and serves as the central meeting point for all guided tours.
Safety
Armed park rangers consistently accompany all trekking groups due to the inherent presence of unpredictable forest buffaloes and gorillas. Ranger instructions must be strictly followed in every situation.
Time needed
The entire hike up to the impressive crater lake and back usually takes anywhere from six to eight hours. The exact duration heavily depends on current trail conditions and the overall fitness of the group.
