Lake Albert (Congo - Kinshasa)

Weather…

Lake Albert, also known as Mwitanzige, is located within the Albertine Rift on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. It was named in 1864 by explorer Samuel Baker in honor of Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria. Covering an area of about 5,300 square kilometers, it is Africa's seventh-largest lake and a vital link in the upper Nile River system. The lake is primarily fed by the Victoria Nile and the Semliki River, with its outlet at the northern end being the Albert Nile. Geologically, the lake is significant due to the discovery of substantial oil reserves beneath its bed, leading to increased industrial focus in the region. Fishing is the cornerstone of the local economy, with the Nile perch being a particularly important commercial species. Despite its wealth, the lake faces ecological threats from industrial activity and invasive plant species like the water hyacinth. The surrounding terrain features dramatic escarpments and marshy flats that support a wide range of birdlife. Lake Albert remains a critical geostrategic and ecological asset in East Africa.
