The Virunga Volcanoes are an impressive chain of eight volcanoes stretching along the borders of Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Uganda. Geographically, they are part of the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift System. The chain includes both extinct and highly active volcanoes, with Mount Karisimbi being the highest point at 4,507 meters. This mountainous landscape is world-famous for its unique biodiversity and serves as a sanctuary for the endangered mountain gorillas. The volcanic soils of the surrounding areas are extremely fertile, leading to high population densities on the lower slopes. Historically, the region was the site of pioneering primate research, most notably by Dian Fossey, whose legacy continues in the Volcanoes National Park. Geologically, the volcanoes are relatively young, having formed over the last few million years through tectonic shifts. Today, the area is a hub for international ecotourism and plays a key role in the economy and conservation efforts of the entire region.
