Mount Mikeno is an extinct volcano located in Virunga National Park in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Reaching a height of 4,437 meters, it is the second-highest peak in the Virunga range and is noted for its exceptionally steep and jagged slopes, making it one of Africa's most challenging climbing destinations. Unlike its active neighbors, Mikeno has been dormant for ages, with a summit structure that shows significant signs of erosion. The mountain serves as a critical habitat for the endangered mountain gorilla, which inhabits the dense forests on its lower flanks. The vegetation is highly diverse, ranging from tropical montane rainforest to distinct afro-alpine zones at the highest elevations. Geologically, it belongs to the western arm of the East African Rift and consists primarily of ancient volcanic deposits. Mount Mikeno stands as both a natural monument and a symbol of conservation efforts in a region often affected by instability.
