Mount Nyamuragira is a massive shield volcano in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, widely regarded as Africa's most active volcano. It is situated roughly 25 kilometers north of Lake Kivu within the borders of Virunga National Park. Unlike the steep-sided Nyiragongo, Nyamuragira possesses a broad, low-profile shape formed by successive layers of highly fluid basaltic lava flows. Eruptions often occur from fissures along its flanks, producing extensive lava fields that cut through the surrounding tropical rainforest. Over 40 eruptions have been documented since 1885, with recent activity often manifesting as a small lava lake within its central caldera. The volcano emits vast quantities of sulfur dioxide, which impacts local air quality and contributes to acid rain in the region. Geologically, it is an integral part of the East African Rift system, providing critical insights into the tectonic dynamics of the central continent.
