This informal economy is a vital source of income for the local population, yet it poses severe environmental challenges, including mercury pollution and massive soil erosion. The town of Kamituga has grown substantially due to this gold rush, though it suffers from a lack of formal infrastructure and the social complexities of unregulated mining. Geologically, the area is positioned on the edge of the Ituri-Kasai Craton, which explains its high level of mineralization and economic potential.
