Idjwi Island, situated in the heart of Lake Kivu, is one of the Democratic Republic of Congo's best-kept secrets. Untouched by much of the conflict that has affected surrounding regions, this serene destination is great for travelers seeking tranquility, authentic cultural immersion, and impressive natural beauty. The island is entirely distinct from the bustling mainland, operating at a slow, peaceful pace that invites deep relaxation. Visitors can explore sprawling pineapple and coffee plantations, cycle along dirt paths passing through photogenic fishing villages, or simply relax by the pristine shores of Lake Kivu. The islanders, primarily of the Havu tribe, are incredibly welcoming. Guests have the opportunity to interact with local potters and weavers, or take a traditional dugout canoe out onto the lake. Local cuisine is simple but delicious, heavily featuring fresh sambaza (a tiny lake fish) and sweet tropical fruits. Reaching Idjwi requires taking a speedboat or ferry from either Goma to the north or Bukavu to the south. The journey itself is incredibly scenic. The dry season, spanning from June to August, provides the most comfortable climate for exploring the island's outdoor attractions and enjoying clear skies.
