Lake Kivu is a spectacular freshwater lake located in the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift. Straddling the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, it is one of the African Great Lakes and is distinguished by its dramatic, steep shorelines, emerald-green terraced hills, and the looming presence of active and extinct volcanoes on its northern horizon. The sheer beauty of the lake makes it a major highlight for any traveler visiting the eastern DRC. The Congolese shore of Lake Kivu is dotted with spirited cities like Goma to the north and Bukavu to the south. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, from taking a scenic boat cruise or kayaking along the tranquil waters, to relaxing at lakeside resorts. A unique geological phenomenon of Lake Kivu is its deep waters, which hold vast quantities of trapped methane gas. The lake is also free of crocodiles and hippos, making some areas suitable for swimming. Gastronomy around the lake heavily features fresh fish, most notably the tiny, delicious 'sambaza'. Traveling between Goma and Bukavu by passenger ferry is a popular and stunningly scenic way to experience the lake's grandeur. The region is pleasant to visit year-round, but the dry season from June to September provides the clearest skies and most comfortable temperatures for outdoor exploration and enjoying the dramatic sunsets over the water.
