Weather…

The Itombwe Massif is an extensive and rugged mountain massif in the Sud-Kivu province in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. It is part of the Albertine Rift mountains and is considered one of the most important, but also most threatened, biodiversity hotspots in Africa. The peaks reach altitudes of over 3,400 meters, with Mount Mohi being the highest point at 3,475 meters. The massif is the source of several large rivers, including the Ulindi and the Elila. The region is home to an exceptional diversity of endemic species, particularly birds, amphibians, and primates, including one of the largest remaining populations of the Eastern Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla beringei graueri). The forests and high-altitude swamps of Itombwe are crucial for water storage and climate regulation. However, the area is severely threatened by deforestation for agriculture, mining (coltan, gold), and intense poaching. A part of the area was designated a nature reserve in 2016, but its protection remains a major challenge.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access to the Itombwe Massif in eastern DR Congo is extremely difficult and usually occurs via Bukavu or Uvira, often requiring multi-day journeys by off-road vehicle and on foot.
📅
Best season
The best time to visit is during the shorter dry seasons, typically from June to August, to somewhat ensure the passability of the tracks and the viability of the mountain trails in the rainforest.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is extremely rugged, characterized by steep mountain ridges and dense tropical rainforest; the paths are often muddy, slippery, and require a very high level of physical fitness.
🎒
What to bring
Full expedition gear including waterproof clothing, robust trekking boots, and mosquito nets is mandatory; you must be equipped for self-sufficiency for several days in the wilderness.
🅿️
Parking
There are no formal parking lots in the region; vehicles are usually securely stored in the starting cities like Bukavu, as the massif itself can only be explored on foot with local support.
⚠️
Safety
Travel only accompanied by experienced guides and stay informed about the current security situation; consider health risks like malaria and the extreme remoteness of the entire area.
⏱️
Time needed
Plan at least 5 to 10 days for an exploration of the massif, as the journey to and from the area, as well as progressing through the dense forest, are very time-consuming and strenuous.
