Fort de Shinkakasa (Congo - Kinshasa)

Weather…

Fort de Shinkakasa was constructed in 1891 near Boma to secure the entrance to the Congo River against potential naval or land-based threats. The structure is a star-shaped fortress designed according to the strategic principles of the Belgian military engineer Henri Alexis Brialmont. Originally, it was primarily intended to deter Portuguese incursions from Angola or suppress local uprisings against the Congo Free State. The fort was armed with eight heavy 160mm Krupp cannons, which were cutting-edge artillery pieces at the time. A notable event in the fort's history was the Force Publique mutiny of 1900, during which African soldiers rebelled against their Belgian officers and seized control of the fortification. This uprising was eventually suppressed, but the fort's strategic importance declined in subsequent decades. Today, the ruins of Shinkakasa are a protected historical monument, reflecting the military history of the Congo. The massive walls and cannon emplacements remain partially intact despite decades of exposure and neglect.
