Pont Maréchal (Congo - Kinshasa)

Weather…

The Maréchal Bridge (Pont Maréchal) near Matadi is the only bridge spanning the lower reaches of the Congo River and stands as a masterpiece of civil engineering. This suspension bridge was constructed with significant Japanese financial and technical assistance, officially opening in 1983. Spanning a total length of 722 meters with a main span of 520 meters, it was the longest suspension bridge in Africa at the time of its completion. It provides a vital link between the port city of Matadi and the opposite bank, serving as a crucial component of the transport corridor connecting the Atlantic coast to Kinshasa. While originally designed for both road and rail traffic, the rail tracks have never been fully utilized for regular service. Managed by the OEBK organization, the bridge is of immense strategic importance to the national economy, enabling the flow of essential goods. Its impressive structure and strategic location make it one of the most prominent modern landmarks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
