The Maréchal Bridge (Pont Maréchal) near Matadi is the only bridge spanning the lower reaches of the Congo River and stands as a masterpiece of civil engineering. This suspension bridge was constructed with significant Japanese financial and technical assistance, officially opening in 1983. Spanning a total length of 722 meters with a main span of 520 meters, it was the longest suspension bridge in Africa at the time of its completion. It provides a vital link between the port city of Matadi and the opposite bank, serving as a crucial component of the transport corridor connecting the Atlantic coast to Kinshasa. While originally designed for both road and rail traffic, the rail tracks have never been fully utilized for regular service. Managed by the OEBK organization, the bridge is of immense strategic importance to the national economy, enabling the flow of essential goods. Visiting
Pont Maréchal is an active suspension bridge for road and rail traffic near Matadi; pedestrians cannot walk on it as it is closed to foot traffic. Observation points at both ends offer views of the impressive suspended structure.
Typical hours
The viewpoints are accessible at any time as they are on public land. The best views are early morning when mist hangs over the Congo, or late afternoon in warm light. Avoid the rainy season (October-May) for clearer conditions.
Photography
Photography from the official viewpoints is allowed; a wide-angle lens is suitable for the full bridge width. Particularly spectacular are shots with a passing train - ask locals about timetables to catch the moment.
Time needed
Visiting the viewpoints takes about 20 to 30 minutes. If you want to explore the entire area around the bridge, allow 45 minutes to an hour.

Getting there
Matadi is reachable by bus or taxi from Kinshasa (about 5 hours) or from the Angolan border. In Matadi, take a taxi to the bridge, located a few kilometres north of the city.
