Mangroves National Park (Congo - Kinshasa)

Weather…

Mangroves National Park, also known as the Muanda Marine Park, was established in 1992 and is the only marine protected area in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It covers an area of approximately 768 square kilometers at the mouth of the Congo River, where it flows into the Atlantic Ocean near Muanda. The park protects a unique ecosystem consisting of mangrove forests, coastal marshes, and sandbanks, which serve as a nursery for numerous fish species and marine animals. Among the most significant species found here are the African manatee and various species of sea turtles that come to the beaches to lay their eggs. The vegetation is dominated by red and white mangroves, which form a natural barrier against coastal erosion and are essential for water filtration. Geographically, the area is characterized by the constant mixing of fresh water from the Congo and salt water from the ocean, favoring highly specialized fauna. However, the park is threatened by pollution, illegal fishing, and the expansion of oil extraction in the region. Current conservation initiatives focus on monitoring coastal waters and raising awareness among the local population about the value of the mangroves.
