Tshela is a remote but historically vital town located in the far western portion of the Kongo Central Province, deep within the heart of the Mayumbe forest region. The town gained prominence as the terminus of the former Mayumbe railway, which was constructed to ferry commodities like rubber, cocoa, and palm oil to the port of Boma. Tucked away in a hilly landscape defined by dense tropical rainforests and high rainfall, Tshela possesses a unique climate suited for high-value agriculture. It remains a significant production center for bananas, coffee, and cocoa destined for regional and international markets. Although the railway is no longer operational, the town continues to serve as an essential administrative and commercial hub for the Mayumbe people. The local culture is deeply rooted in the traditions of the Bakongo ethnic group, who have stewarded the surrounding lands for centuries. Tshela stands as a symbol of the agricultural wealth and historical connectivity of the Congolese interior forest zone.
