Sokolac Castle (Croatia)

Weather…

Sokolac Castle in Brinje is one of the most significant medieval noble residences in the Lika region. It was built in the early 15th century by the powerful Frankopan family, who ruled over vast territories of the Croatian coast and hinterland. The fortress's most exceptional feature is the Gothic Chapel of the Holy Trinity, uniquely designed on two levels, an architectural rarity in Southeast Europe. While the ground floor was used for storage and as a burial site, the upper floor was reserved for religious services and noble ceremonies. The chapel is adorned with intricate Gothic rib vaulting and the carved coats of arms of the Frankopan and Kurjaković families. Sokolac held a crucial strategic position on the trade route connecting the coast to the interior and withstood numerous sieges during the wars with the Ottoman Empire. Although the once-massive outer walls are mostly in ruins today, the surviving chapel stands as a magnificent example of High Gothic architecture and the legacy of the Croatian aristocracy.
