Petrinja is situated in the historical Banovina region at the confluence of the Petrinjčica and Kupa rivers, roughly 60 kilometers south of Zagreb. The city's history is deeply tied to its military origins, beginning in 1592 when an Ottoman fortress was constructed to facilitate further conquest. Following its liberation, Petrinja evolved into a significant administrative center within the Habsburg Military Frontier during the 18th century. The city is globally recognized for its food industry, specifically the Gavrilovic meat factory, which was established in 1690 and is the oldest salami producer in Croatia. Its urban landscape was historically defined by Late Baroque and Neoclassical architecture, much of which was severely affected by the devastating earthquake in December 2020. Current efforts focus on large-scale urban renewal and the restoration of historical monuments. Additionally, Petrinja is known for its traditional pottery craft, symbolized by the 'stucka' clay vessel.
