Velika Gorica is situated southeast of Zagreb in the historical Turopolje region and currently stands as the sixth-largest city in Croatia. The area's history reaches back to Roman times, evidenced by the archaeological remains of the ancient city of Andautonia located nearby. During the Middle Ages, it served as the heart of the Noble Community of Turopolje, an autonomous entity with unique legal privileges. The city underwent rapid urbanization during the 20th century, evolving from a rural settlement into a modern economic and administrative center. Today, Velika Gorica is home to Croatia's primary international airport, Franjo Tuđman, making it a vital transportation hub. Despite its proximity to the capital, the city maintains a distinct identity through its traditional wooden architecture and local folk customs. It remains an important center for culture and education within the Zagreb County.
