Palud Ornithological Reserve (Croatia)

Weather…

The Palud Ornithological Reserve is located approximately 8 kilometers southwest of Rovinj in Istria and is the only bird sanctuary of its kind on the peninsula. The reserve consists of a brackish swamp created by the mixing of freshwater from underground springs and saltwater from the sea. Originally a natural marsh, a 200-meter-long canal was dug to the sea in 1906 under orders from the Austro-Hungarian military to increase salinity and prevent the breeding of malaria-carrying mosquitoes. This ecological intervention led to the development of a unique habitat that now attracts more than 220 bird species, including rare migratory birds. The 20-hectare area was officially designated as a protected reserve in 2001. Today, it features specialized observation points that allow visitors to view the diverse avian life without disturbing the sensitive ecosystem.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Spring and autumn migration periods are the most rewarding, with many bird species passing through the marsh. Summer has breeding birds, but early mornings are best to avoid heat; winter brings waterfowl, though fewer species.
🌅
Best time of day
Dawn is prime time as birds become active after roosting. Late afternoon also sees increased activity before dusk; midday is generally quiet, so plan accordingly.
📜
Etiquette
Keep to established paths and viewing hides to avoid disturbing nesting birds. Do not play loud music or use drones, as they scare wildlife; feeding birds is prohibited and harmful to their natural diet.
🎒
What to bring
Bring binoculars and a field guide to identify the many wetland species. Waterproof footwear is advisable due to damp paths and marsh edges; a spotting scope can be useful for distant birds on the water.
🧭
Getting there
The reserve is a short drive from Rovinj, with a marked entrance and small parking area. It can also be reached by bicycle along coastal roads; public transport options are limited, so a car or taxi is recommended.
🦌
What to expect
Birdwatching requires stillness and quiet; wait for birds to come to you. Do not expect to see every species on the list; enjoy what appears, and early visits often yield the best sightings.
