Bale, also known as Valle, sits on a hill in western Istria, roughly 5 kilometers from the Adriatic coast. The entire town is constructed from local limestone, preserving its 15th-century medieval layout and charm. Its most prominent landmark is the Soardo-Bembo Palace, a remarkable Gothic-Renaissance building wedged between two defensive towers. Below the Parish Church of St. Julian, a crypt holds ancient Roman stone fragments and sarcophagi. Bale is recognized as a cultural hub, notably for its annual Last Minute Open Jazz Festival that attracts international artists. The surrounding area is rich in olive groves and vineyards, leading down to the pristine beaches of San Polo and Colone. Historically, the famous adventurer Giacomo Casanova visited Bale several times in the 18th century, a fact celebrated in local lore.
