Peroj is located on the southwest coast of Istria, near the popular resort of Fažana. The village's history is extraordinary: after a 17th-century plague epidemic depopulated the area, it was resettled in 1657 by 13 Montenegrin families from the Crmnica region. These settlers were allowed to keep their Orthodox faith and language, making Peroj a unique ethnic and religious enclave in predominantly Catholic Istria to this day. The architectural landmark is the Orthodox Church of St. Spyridon, built in 1834 on the site of an older chapel. It houses valuable icons and remains the community's spiritual center. Nearby are the remains of the Pre-Romanesque Basilica of St. Stephen (Sv. Stjepan). The village has preserved its rural character, with stone houses surrounded by vast olive groves and vineyards. For tourists, Peroj features long, well-maintained pebble beaches with a direct view of the Brijuni Islands National Park. A seaside promenade connects Peroj to Fažana, first-rate for walking or cycling. Local gastronomy reflects the influences of both cultures, and Peroj olive oil is ranked among the best in the region. It is a good spot for travelers looking to combine cultural history with a relaxing beach holiday.
