Valbandon is set on the southwest coast of Istria, just two kilometers from Fažana, boasting a direct view of the Brijuni Islands. Its name derives from the Italian 'valle abandonata' (abandoned valley), a nod to the area's history following the plague epidemics of the Middle Ages. Today, Valbandon is a contemporary tourist settlement cherished for its tranquil ambiance and sprawling pebble beaches shaded by pine trees. In Roman times, the area was a center for purple dye production and home to magnificent summer villas. Archaeological digs along the shoreline have revealed the remains of luxury residences adorned with mosaics, once belonging to the wealthy elite of Pula. A local culinary highlight is the 'Valbandon under the lid' festival (Valbandon pod čripnjom), where traditional meals are slow-cooked under a clay bell over an open fire. For nature enthusiasts, Valbandon gives numerous cycling and walking paths that wind along the coast or through lush olive groves. The shallow beaches are convenient for families with small children. Given its proximity to Pula and its famous Roman Arena, Valbandon serves as an excellent base for cultural sightseeing.
