💡 Tips
- Arrive before 10:00 AM for birdwatching, before the heat and traffic noise cause the birds to retreat into deeper cover.
- Stop on the bridge for a photo; it has one of the best vantage points over the Mirna River estuary.
- Bring binoculars as many rare bird species tend to stay in the middle of the lagoons, far from the road.
- Park in the free spots near the local restaurants located right by the bridge for easy access to the trails.
🍽 Food
Due to the riverside location, local taverns often serve fresh eel or other freshwater fish catches.
Try mussels prepared 'na buzaru' style, often sourced directly from the nearby Tarska Vala bay.
A seasonal highlight in spring, made with asparagus foraged from the Mirna river valley.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The Tar-Vabriga region is world-renowned for its olive oil; buy it directly from local mills for the best quality.
Look for small stalls selling preserves made from fruits grown in the fertile Mirna valley.
A peaceful path along the river, convenient for long walks away from the busy coastal tourist centers.
Find a quiet observation spot at the edge of the reeds to enjoy the undisturbed sounds of nature.
Water temperature…
Antenal is located at a geographically striking point in Istria, right where the Mirna River meets the Adriatic Sea. The village is primarily known for the long causeway and bridge that connect the coastal towns of Novigrad and Poreč. This crossing provides travelers with spectacular views of the wide river delta, which transforms its appearance with the ebb and flow of the tide. The mixing of fresh and salt water creates a unique ecosystem here. The area surrounding Antenal, known as Tarska vala, is a significant bird sanctuary. Ornithologists and nature lovers come here to observe herons, ducks, and various migratory birds that nest or rest in the reed beds. The stillness of the lagoon, contrasted with the sea waves on the other side of the dam, makes it a special place for photographers and hikers. Paths along the river lead deep into the Mirna Valley, passing fertile fields. Culinary-wise, Antenal is a lesser-known spot for seafood. Since the river and sea waters blend, certain species of fish and shellfish thrive particularly well. In the few but excellent restaurants located directly on the road, one can enjoy freshly caught fish while watching the sunset over the bay. The region is also famous for high-quality wines and olive oils produced in the nearby hills of Tar and Vabriga. For tourists, Antenal is often a brief stop, but it is well worth parking the car and walking along the dam. The gentle sea breeze and the panorama of the open sea on one side and the green valley on the other are incomparable. Antenal marks the gateway to the southern part of Istria's west coast, combining natural wonder with a strategic location.
