Lim Channel (Croatia)

Weather…

The Lim Channel, often incorrectly referred to as a fjord, is actually a flooded river valley known as a ria, located on the western coast of Istria between Vrsar and Rovinj. The channel extends approximately 12 kilometers inland and reaches a depth of about 30 meters at its deepest point. Geomorphologically, it was formed by the erosion of the Pazinčica River, which now mostly flows underground. The steep cliffs lining the channel rise up to 100 meters high and are covered with lush maquis and oak forests. Due to the low salinity and high oxygen concentration of the water, the Lim Channel is a well-suited location for mariculture, specifically oyster and mussel farming. The entire area is protected as a significant landscape and a special marine reserve, which limits motorboat traffic to preserve the environment and water quality.
