Dragon's Eye Lake (Croatia)

Weather…

Dragon's Eye (Zmajevo oko) is a unique meromictic karst lake phenomenon located on the Gradina peninsula in Rogoznica. Surrounded by vertical cliffs up to 24 meters high, the lake covers an area of roughly 10,000 square meters with a maximum depth of approximately 15 meters. Its water is characterized by distinct layers that do not mix due to geochemical barriers, with lower layers often being completely devoid of oxygen. Every few years, a phenomenon known as 'boiling' occurs when hydrogen sulfide rises from the sediment, temporarily depleting oxygen and resetting the lake's ecology before it naturally regenerates. The lake is connected to the surrounding Adriatic Sea via underground limestone fissures and caves, causing it to experience noticeable tidal changes. Local folklore is rich with legends about a dragon dwelling in the depths and guarding the surrounding territory.
