Šibenik is a historic city on the Adriatic coast of Croatia, uniquely situated in a protected bay at the mouth of the Krka River. Unlike many coastal cities founded by Greeks or Romans, Šibenik was established by Croats in the 9th century, making it the oldest native Croatian town on the Adriatic. Its most iconic landmark is the Cathedral of St. James, an architectural marvel built entirely of stone using unique interlocking techniques, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000. The city is guarded by a formidable defense system consisting of four fortresses: St. Michael's, St. John's, Barone, and the sea-based St. Nicholas' Fortress. St. Nicholas' Fortress is also a UNESCO site as part of the Venetian Works of Defence. Šibenik serves as the primary gateway to the Krka National Park, famous for its cascading waterfalls and lush nature. In recent years, the city has undergone a cultural transformation, with its fortresses now serving as spectacular open-air stages for international music and arts festivals.
