Varaždin Castle (Croatia)

Weather…

Varaždin Castle (Stari grad) is the preeminent landmark of the city and one of the finest examples of fortification architecture in Croatia. First mentioned in the 12th century, it served as the seat of the regional governors. In the 16th century, threatened by Ottoman expansion, the fortress was reconstructed into a modern Renaissance 'Wasserburg' (water castle) by Italian military engineers. It is characterized by its stark white walls, distinctive round towers, and a deep moat that originally surrounded the entire complex. The castle was owned by several influential noble families, including the Counts of Celje and the Frankopans, before becoming the residence of the Erdődy family until 1925. Today, it houses the Varaždin City Museum, featuring extensive collections of period furniture, historical weapons, porcelain, and paintings that reflect the city's aristocratic past. Given that Varaždin was the capital of Croatia from 1756 to 1776, the castle remains a symbol of the nation's political and cultural peak during the Baroque era. The structure is beautifully integrated into a public park, with its earthen ramparts serving as popular walking paths.
