The site is shrouded in the haunting legend of Veronika of Desinić, a peasant girl allegedly immured in the castle walls due to her forbidden love for a nobleman. Today, the fully restored castle hosts spirited medieval fairs, archery tournaments, and the renowned Tabor Film Festival. Its courtyard with elegant Renaissance arcades and the chapel housing historical artifacts make it one of the most culturally significant landmarks in the region.

Visiting
The castle can be visited inside and out. The interior museum displays period furniture, weapons, and art. The courtyard and outer grounds are freely accessible.
Typical hours
Typically open April through October, Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am to 6 pm, closed on Mondays. Off-season opening hours are often shorter, so check ahead.
Photography
Photography without flash is usually allowed inside, but tripods are not permitted. Drone use is prohibited within the castle perimeter. Outside, you may photograph freely.
Time needed
Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours to see the museum and grounds. With a walk around the hilltop and the viewing terrace, plan roughly 2.5 hours.

Combine with fairytale Trakošćan Castle, the Neanderthal Museum in Krapina, or the thermal springs of Tuhelj. A hike in the Zagorje hills also pairs well.
Getting there
Best reached by car from Zagreb (around 70 km) or Krapina. Public buses are infrequent; a taxi from Krapina is an option. Signposted parking is available at the foot of the hill.

Visit on a clear autumn day - the Zagorje hills glow golden and the view is at its best. Pack a picnic for the castle park.
