Medvedgrad Castle (Croatia)

Weather…

Medvedgrad is a medieval fortress built in 1250 on the southern slopes of Medvednica mountain to protect Zagreb following the devastating Mongol invasion. Commissioned by Bishop Philip of Zagreb, the castle served as a strategic stronghold and residence for various noble families, including the Counts of Celje and the Frankopans. The site features double defensive walls, a formidable main tower, and the Gothic Chapel of St. Philip and James, which is noted as one of the best-preserved examples of its kind in Croatia. A massive earthquake in 1590 severely damaged the structure, leading to its eventual abandonment and centuries of decay. Systematic restoration efforts only began in the 1970s and 80s, bringing the fortress back to its former prominence. In 1994, the 'Altar of the Homeland' was established within the castle walls, serving as a monument to all those who fell for Croatian freedom. Today, Medvedgrad houses a modern visitor center and gives one of the most panoramic panoramic views of the capital city, Zagreb.
