Mamfe is a vital commercial hub, positioned strategically along the Cross River near the Nigerian border. The city thrives on cross-border trade, making its markets a melting pot of Cameroonian and Nigerian goods, cultures, and currencies. The historic Cross River serves as a central artery for the city, historically used for transporting goods and now offering scenic, albeit rustic, riverbank views. The surrounding environment is characterized by dense, lowland tropical rainforests with an intensely hot and humid climate year-round. Adventurous travelers use Mamfe as a base for exploring the remote Korup National Park, located further south, or traversing the rugged forested terrain. Local cuisine is rich and spicy, heavily featuring eru (a wild vine leaf stew), waterfufu, and fresh river fish. The city is connected to Bamenda and the Nigerian border via the heavily trafficked Trans-African Highway. Because of the extreme rainfall typical of the region, traveling is highly recommended during the brief dry season from December to February to avoid deep mud and impassable roads.
