Lake Nyos (Cameroon)

Weather…

Lake Nyos is a crater lake in northwest Cameroon that gained international notoriety following a tragic natural disaster in 1986. The lake sits within a maar, formed by volcanic activity along the Cameroon Line. In August 1986, the lake suddenly released a massive cloud of carbon dioxide (CO2), which cascaded into the surrounding valleys, suffocating over 1,700 people and thousands of livestock. This rare phenomenon is known as a limnic eruption, occurring when gases accumulate under high pressure in deep water layers and are released abruptly. Since 2001, degassing tubes have been installed to siphon off CO2 in a controlled manner and prevent a recurrence of the catastrophe. Despite its dangerous history, the lake is known for its extraordinary natural beauty and deep blue waters, surrounded by steep, forested cliffs. Scientific monitoring of the lake remains among the most intensive in the world today to guarantee the safety of the local populations who have returned to the region.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching the lake involves traveling via winding, often unpaved rural roads in the Northwest Region, typically starting from the town of Wum. A robust 4x4 vehicle is usually necessary for the final, rugged stretch.
📅
Best season
The dry season, from November to March, is the safest and most practical time for road access, as heavy rains during the wet season can cause severe mudslides and make the dirt tracks completely impassable.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The lake sits within a steep volcanic crater, surrounded by lush, rocky slopes. Hiking down to the water's edge or around the rim involves navigating uneven, steep, and sometimes slippery volcanic terrain.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy hiking boots, reliable rain gear, and sufficient drinking water are essential. Due to the area's history, visitors might also want to bring a knowledgeable local guide who understands the environmental context.
🅿️
Parking
Visitors generally park in designated clearings or near the local villages before taking a short hike up to the crater rim. Always ensure your vehicle is parked safely off the main dirt tracks to allow passage.
⚠️
Safety
While a degassing system has been installed, visitors must heed any local warnings regarding volcanic activity or unexpected gas emissions. Stick to established viewpoints and never camp directly at the water's edge.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical visit lasts two to three hours at the crater itself, though the challenging journey to reach this remote region of Cameroon will likely consume a full day or more.
