The Palace of the Fon of Bafut is an exceptional witness to the traditional architecture and social organization of northwest Cameroon. The complex consists of over 50 buildings arranged around a central courtyard, serving as the residence for the Fon (king) and his numerous wives. The heart of the palace is the Achum shrine, an architectural masterpiece with a distinctive pointed grass roof, regarded as the most sacred site of the Bafut people. The palace's history spans several centuries, though parts of the structure were destroyed during colonial wars in the late 19th century and later rebuilt. Bafut remains one of the most powerful traditional kingdoms in the Grassfields region, maintaining its cultural autonomy to this day. Each year, the palace hosts the Bafut Abin festival, featuring traditional dances and rites that reinforce the community's unity. The site is currently on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list because it represents a unique fusion of material culture and living traditions. Visitors can tour the onsite museum, which displays royal regalia and historical items from the colonial resistance period.
